    As an alternate to the lead shot method of adding weight in the nose, molten lead works. First submerge the nose cone in ice cream or ice and drip in the lead using a soldering iron. Don't do it too fast or the plastic might melt. Also, don't drip the lead on ice or water or it will splatter. Cover the finished weight with epoxy. Works great for very pointy nose cones such as Bull Pup. - G. (NY)

    I always support the forward edge of the fins with a centering ring to the motor mount tube, this supports the main body tube during landings so that the leverage of the fins do not kink the tubing just in front of them. - (R.V.)

    If you modify a 24mm 'D' engine rocket to take 24mm reloads, make sure you file down your engine mount hook at the forward, to allow for the forward end closure of the reload to fit.

    To add nose weight, mix lead shot, fishing leaders, or other small metal balls with epoxy, and then pour into the nose cone opening, which might have to be enlarged. Then pour epoxy on top of this. Allow to set for at least 8 hours, and make sure that the nose cone is supported and point down.

    When making your own bulkheads out of balsa wood blocks, use a hole saw that is the closest oversize possible. Be sure to drill parallel with the grain, NOT perpendicular with the grain. Then install a bolt the size of the center drill (usually 1/4" dia.) and secure with a washer and nut. The bolt should be long enough to allow you chuck the bolt in a motorized drill. The drill should either be a drill press type or a motorized hand drill placed in a vise. Turn on drill press or for a hand drill, lock the trigger down. Use medium grit sandpaper to obtain the proper diameter. Balsa wood sands very fast so don't be concerned if your plug is as much as 1/2" oversize. If you need thinner bulkhead pieces, just use a handsaw to cut to the proper width. A coping saw is good for this. The reason for drilling the hole saw with the grain is that when you sand the hole plug (which is your bulkhead)it will evenly sand throughout the entire rotation of the drill and will be round. If you drilled cross grain, the sanded plug will always be oval! - P.J.

    When you modify your rocket to take larger engines (from 18mm to 24mm for example) make sure you reinforce centering rings and engine mounts, and make sure you add the proper nose weight for balance.
