    Tango Papa 2x Upscale Mars Lander First, a little bit of history. I've been intrigued by the Estes Mars Lander since 1976 when I built and launched my first (and only original) one. I was 11 at the time and it was a great experience…one of the highlights of my early rocketry days. Having gone through several phases of model rocketry over the years (1983, 1989, 1992, 1999 and most recently since mid-2006) I've built a lot of different model rockets. During the 1999 phase I'd already become aware of the awesome JimZ and the BMS sites and I decided to clone (as near as I could) a Mars Lander, though based on the BT-101 versus the stock body tube. The BT-101 choice was made because I had a "spare" Estes Saturn V that I didn't mind cannibalizing at the time. Armed with a decent printer and a CAD program I laid out the 2 shrouds and eventually a slightly fatter Mars Lander "clone" emerged. Since I didn't have any proper decals I just painted the whole body gloss black. The legs are orange and the BMS nosecone is red. I dubbed it "Dark Lander" and I eventually flew it on C6-3 with the SARG (Sacramento Area Rocketry Group) in 1999. I also flew it in 2006. I moved to Illinois in 2000 and then to Phoenix in 2004 and the surviving rockets from the 1992 and 1999 phases remained boxed up…until mid 2006 that is. Unfortunately I don't have any rockets from my earlier phases…especially the Estes 1/70 Saturn 1B and Centuri 1/45 Little Joe II from 1976. During this latest phase of rocketry (about 9 months now) I've built some simple and not-so-simple Estes and Quest kits, made some clones (2 Estes Astron Space Planes and the Astron Invader gliders to name a few); several Estes Outlanders (painted/decalled to resemble Mars Landers), and a Semroc Mars Lander among others. I've become NAR Level 1 certified with my LOC IV, made several classic rocket purchases off E-Bay, attended NARAM-47, and somehow managed to find time to buy, build, and finish a Tango Papa 2X upscale Mars Lander. What a great kit. It's definitely a project for experienced rocketeers, and past building experience with any similar Mars Lander kit is a definite plus. At least you'll already have a pre-visualization of the innards and shroud work. When I bought this kit in 2006 I didn't yet have my sights set on become HPR certified…I though it'd look good as a display model. Then the HPR bug bit and I got certified with my LOC !V and decided to build the Lander to flight standards…not that I probably wouldn't have anyway. My experience with the "big one" was enlightening. I can't add much to what's already been said about it. Maybe it was a grand leap to tackle such a project early in my budding High Power life, but it was worth it. I learned a little about epoxies, fiberglassing, phenolic tubes, and working with rockets on a larger, heavier scale than I've been used to. Thankfully, I think my 2X upscale turned out pretty good. It hasn't flown yet but I hope to launch on March 10, 2007 with the Superstition Spacemodelling Society at Rainbow Valley, Arizona. Not sure yet what motor I'm going to use, but surely one of the 38mm reloads recommended in the kit instructions. Update: Today is Sunday March 11, 2007 and the first flight of the lander is in the books. Overall it was a success, with only minor ejection-induced damage. I flew it on an Aerotech I-211W-M with the delay shortened. I've submitted a full review with photos that should be uploaded in due course. The lander will be repaired and hopefully will punch a hole in the sky at the next SSS launch in April 2007.
