Brief:
The Estes Scamp was production from 1977-1983. It was listed as a sports flier and is easy to clone. This was also a Estes Originally Coldpower Convertible KL-1. The plans can be found at JimZ Plans or at Ye Old Rocket Plans. The decals can be bought from Excelsior Rocketry. This is a single stage rocket with a 12" parachute.

(Scratch) Estes Scamp cloneThe Instructions for Estes Scamp are easy to follow. That is, they are well illustrated and in logical order. You can download the plans from JimZ Plans or Ye Old Rocket Plans. You will have cut out the fin template to make the fins. I sanded between coats with 320 grit finishing sandpaper. I primed the whole model with Rustoleum white primer.

This is very easy to build rocket. It's a great scratch beginner for someone just starting to build from scratch. I rate this rocket as the same type of build as an Estes Alpha.

The parts were purchased from Semroc and the decals from Excelsior Rocketry.

Finishing:
The wood you will need to fill is nose cone and fins, which I did with three coats of Aero Gloss sanding sealer. I sanded between coats with 320 grit finishing sandpaper. I shot the whole model with Rustoleum White Primer. The nose cone was shot separately with Valspar Gloss Black. You will want tape off 1 1/2" from the top of the tube and paint that gloss black along with one fin painted black. The rest of the rocket was painted using Valspar Bumblebee Yellow. Basic glue for this rocket is white or wood glue.

The original decals for the Scamp were peel and stick. I ordered waterslide decals from Excelsior Rocketry.

Flight:
The recommended motors for this rocket are Estes 1/2A6-2, A8-3, B4-4, and C6-5.

Prepping this rocket is easy 4 sheets of wadding is all you need. I've used Estes A8-3 and A8-5 to fly this rocket.

The rocket flies straight and really shoots off the pad.

Recovery:
2 out 3 flights the nose cone slammed into the rocket causing some dents. I would recommend using a plastic nose cone to build this rocket.

Recovery was easy with the 12" chute.

Summary:
This is a great first rocket with easy to follow instructions which I would recommend to anyone as a first rocket for their first clone.
