Flight Log - 2014-02-21 - Matthew Bond's Estes Mega Der Pink Max

Estes upscaled Red Max Pro Series II kit.  Added an eyebolt to the top centering ring and replaced the shock cord with 20 feet of braided Kevlar.  Added some balsa "dams" to the motor mount which allowed me to pot the TTW fin tabs in epoxy where they attached to the motor mount.  Currently using a kevlar heat shield and a 30 inch Spherachute for recovery.  Rocket was initially flown "nekkid", but final colors will be pink with a purple nosecone and "Der Pink Max" decals from Stickershock.

First flight of the new Estes Mega Der Pink Max, although the rocket was still "nekkid" at this point.  Also the first flight of GRITS 2014.  It had been raining all morning and the field was pretty sloppy but the pads were set up and the safety meeting was over so why not?  Nice boost, smooth and fast off the rail.  I had put a pretty good angle onthe pad since the wind was blowing back towards the flightline.  Rocket was arcing into the wind, past apogee and pointed down at ejection.  Chute did not deploy cleanly but was still partially inflated which turned out to be a good thing since the chute I had was probably too big.  Landed on the field in the mud about 100 yards away with no damage.  I had put a Jolly Logic Altimeter II onboard to collect data but in my excitement to get to the pads I completely forgot to turn it on.
