Quest - High-Q (5012)
Contributed by James Hamilton BriefFrom Quest: High-Q is a great looking and performing mid-size rocket. Over 30 inches tall, the kit features blowmolded plastic nose cone, laser-cut balsa fins and a rugged 29mm diameter motor mount. Flights with an Aerotech F32-6W will go to almost 3,000 feet. Then your High-Q will recover gently on the big 18" fabric parachute. Includes big, easy-to-apply self adhesive decals. Also includes 24mm engine mount adapter that allows you to use 24mm diameter engines. This rocket designed by internationally famous designer Scott Branche ComponentsAll components are well constructed.
ConstructionThe instructions were very good and construction was very easy. The instructions call for the Kevlar cord to be wrapped around the motor mount tube and passed into the main body tube and thus secured to the elastic of the recovery system. I found that I needed to notch the forward centering ring with a hobby knife to allow the Kevlar to pass. I did modify the design slightly by adding a home-made engine retainer using a PVC compression fitting. I also ended up replacing the elastic shock cord with a 3' length of 3mm utility cord. FinishingFinishing was very easy. The most difficult part was finding a good purple spray paint. Construction Score: 4
FlightUsing an AT E20-7 provides a very nice flight. Even remaining with the E, a very large recovery area is needed. SummaryI like this kit very much and can't wait to get it out on the range. The addition of plywood through the wall fins, a non-elastic shock cord, and a screw on motor retainer would make this kit outstanding. Overall Rating: 4 Flight Log
