Rocket PicBrief:
New "E" motor high altitude sport rocket. Single staged, parachute recovery. I do believe that this is the old Maniac rocket with new colors, a new name, and a new motor mount to accommodate the E9 motor.

Construction:
The kit included the motor mount tube, block, adapter for D motors, centering rings, hook, two purple BT-56 body tubes, coupler, launch lug, standoff, yellow fin can, shock cord, nose cone, 12 and 24 inch pre-assembled parachutes and decals.

The instructions were typical Estes with illustrations and the shock cord mount. This kit is rated at skill level 2 but I think that is because of the 24mm mount and the ability to fly on an E motor. I started with the motor mount. The motor hook on my kit unfortunately was missing, so rather than waiting for Estes to send me one, I decided to go with friction fit retention. I glued the mount into one of the body tubes. I then glued the fin can into place. After that I glued the launch lug standoffs into place. The kit included a 1/4 inch lug (can't imagine why)! I replaced that with a 3/16 lug. I now joined the body tubes. I then assembled the shock cord assembly and glued it into place. Two parachutes were included. An addendum was included to inform you that if you wanted to use the 24 inch chute to cut out the entire spill hole to prevent loss of the rocket. I used the 12 inch chute and cut the spill hole.

PROS: Fast and easy construction

CONS: Can't think of any.

Finishing:
No real finishing is required because of the purple and yellow parts. Just slap on the decals and that's it. I also painted the lug standoffs and tube joint with purple paint. An optional step is to apply clear spray enamel but I chose not to do this.

PROS: No painting required.

CONS: None

Construction Rating: 5 out of 5

Flight:
Between getting a new job and lousy conditions for flying a rocket like this, I have only flown this rocket once so far. The recommended motors are the D12-5, D12-7, E9-6, E9-8. I also saw the new C11-5 listed for this rocket in the 2002 Estes Catalog. The hook holds the motor in place, but since my hook was missing, I wrapped a single layer of masking tape around the motor and fit it in place behind the adapter. The flight was on a D12-5 and it was without a doubt an awesome flight. Very fast lift-off and arrow straight boost to apogee at 1000 feet or so.

Recovery:
With the small chute, this rocket appeared to come down quick, but safe. I would not recommend using the 24 inch chute. On an E9 flight, I would recommend using a large streamer. Even with a friction fit, I still recovered the rocket with the motor in it.

PROS: Excellent flight performance.

CONS: None

Flight Rating: 5 out of 5

Summary:
Priced at about $15.00 to $21.99, this rocket is a super buy. My thanks goes to EMRR for providing me with this model from the Rocket Give-Away drawing.

Main PROS: Easy and quick construction, no painting required.

Main CONS: None

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

GUEST's OPINION:
07/02 - "Very easy Skill Level 2 rocket to build. Flights are high and straight. I painted the body tubes purple after assembly so the launch lugs were color coordinated. My rocket only came with a 12 inch parachute. Due to high winds on the maiden voyage, the parachute was replaced with a 36x3 inch ripstop nylon streamer. Altitudes were high, and recovery was within 100 yards of the launch site using the E9-8 engines." (E.M.Z.)

GUEST's OPINION:
06/02 - "I've flown the Eliminator twice on E-9's and have to say that I love this rocket. It's fast, it flies high on an E-9 and is quite loud. Nice straight flights. It's very quick and easy to build. I modified mine with an Aerotech style exhaust baffle so I don't need to use wadding. This rocket can look great if you paint it up nice. A worthy edition to any fleet." (P.C.)

GUEST's OPINION:
05/02 - "This rocket is the same as the Maniac, except the motor hook is longer. For small fields, I replaced the chute with ribbed silver mylar streamer. It flies great with B6-2, C5-3, C6-3, and C11-3 motors on small fields." (D.W.G.)

[Enter Rocket Specific Tip]

SPECIFIC ROCKET TIP:
05/05 - "After a few impressive launches on a range of engines (Ds and Es), I decided it was time to give my eliminator an extra kick in the pants. So I purchased a second eliminator and used it to make a booster stage for my original. Now flies two stage to the clouds -> Look out all the CC Express out there!" (G.B. )

SPECIFIC ROCKET TIP:
10/03 - "Step 1E of the instructions talks about putting the green adapter onto the Engine mount tube. It tells you to "remove paper from inside adapter if necessary". Since the green adapter fit nicely when dry, I did not remove any paper. When I put glue on and tried to slide the adapter onto the engine mount, it got stuck before it was half way on. Remove some paper or slide it on and then add a bead of glue, or you will ruin those couple parts of your kit." (K.S. )

SPECIFIC ROCKET TIP:
10/02 - "Being as this is basically a Maniac with a 24mm motor mount, why not use an 18mm adapter and fly it on Cs? As I only get the chance to fly in a field big enough for Ds and Es once a month I decided to try it myself, and it worked perfectly." (J.D.R. )

08-04-2002 Peter Allen AT SU E30-7 Apogee - Perfect 5-10 mph winds - This is a very fast motor. I guess that's what Blue Thunder motors are for. The flight was very fast and probably a little higher than the E15. Ejection was perfect with a 12 inch nylon 'chute. Long walk though.
09-22-2002 Peter Allen AT SU E15-7 Apogee - Perfect 5-10 mph winds - E15 is the perfect motor for this rocket. It is super fast and just about out of sight but not quite. I used a 12 nylon chute which worked perfect.

10-08-2002 James Reyome Est SU C6-5 Apogee - Perfect Calm - The Purple Python of Passion flies GREAT on a C6. Very high boost, great tracer trail to ejection and a perfect, close recovery. Now, if I can only get a calm day and some decent nozzles on some Ds and Es for the next trip to Spears...
10-12-2002 James Reyome Est SU E9-6 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds - Another great flight for a nifty flier. Winds were up just a bit so it drifted somewhat, even with a 12 inch chute.
10-12-2002 James Reyome Est SU E9-6 Apogee - Perfect Calm - Wow! My first flight with an E and it was worth the wait. Perfect flight from beginning to end and well in excess of 1200 feet. An 18 inch chute is way overkill. A 12 is more than sufficient for this bird.
10-27-2002 James Reyome Est SU E9-6 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds Blue Falcon - The Eliminator never fails to impress with an Estes E9. Now, to try a motor with more kick...!
11-28-2002 James Reyome Est SU C6-5 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds - PJ decided we HAD to fly the Eliminator, so we fitted the 18mm adapter and shot it. It's impressive on a C, nice easy liftoff; lofty enough to be striking but not so high you can't see it. A great rocket.
04-27-2003 James Reyome Est SU C6-5 Apogee - NC Down 0-5 mph winds - Another great flight for the Eliminator. Chute pulled some shroud lines, however, and she landed hard. Bent the motor hook but should be repairable.
04-27-2003 James Reyome Est SU C6-5 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds - The Eliminator is always impressive on a C6. Perfect flight.

09-25-2003 Ken Schumacher Est SU E9-6 Apogee - NC Down 5-10 mph winds RIP - Winds aloft must have been more than ground level. It just drifted away, dropping very slowly. I've bought another kit. I may cut a hole in the center of the chute this time. Status: Lost
