Family Fun: More Model Rocketry - August 2016
We went back out on back-to-back Sundays in August to test some VERY old engines I found in my old "Rocket Box". Three C6-5 motors and one C6-3 from the late 1980's! I also found two legs and the center connection for my old launch platform too - can't do much with two legs, but I figured I could always use a 2nd launcher controller. We've been demo'ing a Dremel 3D printer at work and I initially though I might scan in an existing leg & try to make another, but it was simply too large for the 3D printer we have - so I found another design (actually a co-worker did) for a complete kit, I just printed one leg from that design & then cut/glued it into place. While that was all drying, I fashioned a used 30-06 rifle casing to make a stand for the metal deflector on my old launch platform - stay nice & perpendicular to the launch rod. All worked great, though I have to note that for the C-level, even the one with a 3-second delay between the motor cut-off and the parachute deployment doesn't make them land any closer when a breeze picks up! After re-launching the two rockets we have for the B & C engines I got at Hastings on clearance (going out of business), I remembered they had some rockets as well. Since we 'needed' more options, so we went & got three more to add to the rocket family: The "Chaser" for me, the "Emerald Streak" for the boy, and the "Sky Writer" (it looks like an enormous pencil - how COOL is that?) for my girl. So the latter three launches are the maiden flights of these new rockets - using B6-4 motors so they didn't go as high & were much easier to recover. So easy that on the Emerald Streak I caught it out of the air coming down (barely - see the vid...). That was a first for me! Enjoy & thanks for watching!
