It’s their last chance for success. Chris Tanner and Dan Coatta of NASA’s JPL have spent years developing a supersonic decelerator, known as SIAD, designed to slow down spacecraft landing in the thin atmosphere of Mars.
Their first attempt to test this ‘baloot’, a hybrid balloon and parachute, failed. So it’s make or break as they strap their technology onto a cart in the desert, powered by 6 rockets, to see if this SIAD will hold together for a chance to make it on missions to Mars in the future.
