Facetmobile R/C Model Build and Maiden Flight
This video shows the build of my radio control model version of the Facetmobile, and the maiden flight. The Facetmobile is a unique lifting body aircraft designed by Harvey Wainfan, that flew successfully in 1993. Link to the website here: http://www.facetmobile.com/ There are no proper build plans to build a R/C flying model, so I first made the free paper model available from the website above There is also a scale drawing of the space frame construction. I scaled this up to be 28” long with a 22” wingspan. The frame is hard balsa, with hardwood stringers at the most stressed positions. I fitted a 1/32” plywood floor from the nose to the centre On every joint I placed a small square of woven glass cloth, and secured it with CA. I covered the model with iron on matt black material I bought from Ebay, which is very easy to use and very strong, with a silky matt finish. I have no connection other than a satisfied customer so I show the link to the seller here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4m-Matt-Black-Iron-on-RC-Plane-Covering-Film-FREE-POST/253097472601?hash=item3aedc8f259:g:57wAAOSwcLxYKNN6 There have amazingly been no breakages to the space frame despite two very hard landings. I changed the design and raised the lower edges of the vertical fins to avoid damage with constant contact with the ground on take off and landing. It also gives an added angle of attack, which enables faster take off. Flight control is with elevons only. The front wheel is servo controlled, but will only steer on the ground properly with full down on the elevons to keep the nose down. The first motor I fitted was not sufficiently powerful, so I changed it for a 2212/13T 1000KV brushless motor using a 9 x 5 prop, and a 30amp ESC. I use a 1300mah 3C Lipo. There is now ample power for a swift takeoff. The best spot for the Centre of Gravity is difficult to find, the best position so far is 14.25” from the nose, but the model flies with a great C of G variance without disaster. The model with battery weighs 600grams (that is 21oz) so it has a very low wing loading. The maiden flight was a bit fraught with the pilot so busy he had to ask for assistance to add down trim. Further work will be experimenting with C of G position, control throws and trim, and trying some aerobatics; it should have a rapid roll!
