Introduction

Interesting Interceptor Inspired Kit

Components

Construction

I built the kit during the early days of Covid, but it was almost five years befoer I would actually fly her. She one of those models that just displays so well you don't want to risk damaging or losing it. Construction was straightforward, with the biggest challenges getting the wings as straight and true as possible to avoid corkscrewing in flight, as well as making sure the flight pods are securely attached. I never go for a flawless finish, but I ended up with a model that looks pretty good from the launch pad.

Flight

Finally flew the Low Boom SST this morning on a C6-5. Much to my delight the flight was pretty straight and true, only starting to veer off course a bit approaching apogee. Chute deployed fully, but the rocket still came down faster than I would have liked and predictably, both pods broke off on landing. Fortunately, they were clean breaks, and she will be repaired, reinforced, and flown again. I will try a larger chute to see if I can bring her down slower.

But the model is impressive in flight, and should be a real eye catcher for any launch event.

Summary

A fun kit to build and fly. Kind of a civilian counterpart to the Interceptor (which makes sense as they have the same nose cone). A looker on the ground and an attention grabber at the pad. Just make sure those pods are securely fastened to avoid damage and maybe go for something larger than the 18" chute for a gentler recovery.
