Construction:All the parts were in the packaging, like most Estes models. The kit utilizes balsa wood, a canopy for the nose cone, and what I consider a really neat way to swing the wings out. Maybe this method is used a lot ( I'm sure it is) but this was the first time I saw it, and found it neat.

There are many parts in the Tomcat that are special to that kit, including the canopy or cockpit, and odd wing system, and bulkheads (not usually found in separation type beginning models) The kit includes three BT's, one main one containing the Engine Mount, and two auxiliary ones that are merely for decoration ( and holding the vertical fins on place).

The way the wings work is: A cap is located on the bottom of the BT which is attached to a wire that runs parallel to the BT, then curves up and goes through the fins where they intersect. The fins are held in place in this manner, until the wire is pulled down. This happens when the cap is blown out of the BT @ ejection, ( It stays attached to the wire, and the other end of the wire is anchored, so you don't lose it) and the fins are swung out under rubber band power.

The construction is a little tricky at first, but it is fairly easy once you figure out how the pieces go together. I gave the Tomcat its rating in this section, because I believe that the instructions could have been clearer, but at the same time, the steps were challenging, and culminated in a really cool model. I think that if you are up to a good skill level three Estes model, this is a good one. 

Finishing:There was a pretty cool decal sheet included, but I opted not to use them. I painted mine in a Blue Angels motif. I really liked how the model looked, especially with the blue with yellow stripes (if you're not familiar with the Blue Angels, they are a squadron of planes run by the navy that do special stuff)

Construction Rating: 4 ½ out of 5

Flight: I used a C6-5 and that did the job. It was a good launch. The wings are prepped with rubber bands which I lost, but you can use any rubber bands. It does not require wadding because there is no parachute. I had trouble with balancing the Tomcat (that's not my strength) and therefore  it arches over a lot, but not too badly.

Recovery: At ejection, a cap is popped off which causes the wings to swing out under power of the rubber bands. If you've trimmed up the glide well enough, it glides pretty well, and is a real cool model.

Flight Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary: I think that this model is a real near model that is a fairly easy build. This model is a good one to do before entering Estes Masters Series. Have fun with this model and never forget to put the rubber bands on the wings, it's never good.
