Fade To Black Rocket Works Mullet

Fade To Black Rocket Works Mullet

Brief:
Fade To Black Rocket Works' Mullet offers a financially attractive, comfortable method of protecting a rocketeer's neck, shoulders, and ears from the harmful rays of the sun during an enjoyable afternoon of launching rockets.

Construction:
I ordered several Mullets from Cowboy Rocketry, one for me and a few for my fellow club members. (They are so cheap that it wasn't worth ordering just one considering that shipping was nearly as much as one Mullet!) They arrived quickly, individually packaged in plastic baggies in a small USPS box. All of the Mullets ordered were the khaki (tan) style, although olive green, leopard spots, and skull patterns are also available.

My preference is a floppy bucket hat and I chose the Mullet that was a similar color. I put the Mullet on first followed by the hat. Although the Mullet is made of a reasonably dense grade of all cotton cloth, I barely feel against my brow when wearing my hat. It also washes extremely well.

I am fair skinned and admittedly a big baby when I get sunburned. Therefore, I like to invest in minimizing my chances for protecting myself from the sun. The Mullet has been more than acceptable in achieving this goal for the past several months since getting it. If it will stand up to those intensely sunny (and hot) Central Florida days when I'm out at the field launching rockets, it should be more than adequate for rocketeers in just about any climate.

I have another admission about the Mullet too. On no less than four occasions, I have had other folks at a launch make the same completely unsolicited comment: "Is that a Nomex heat shield under your hat?" I laugh, shake my head, and tell them what it really is. I think that the stitching around the edge and the grade of cloth do indeed have a more than passing resemblance to those square pieces of fabric that we like to use in our rockets to protect our chutes!

Summary:
Rocketeers aren't necessarily known for being fashionable--we prefer our rockets to be the "attention getters" at a launch!--so the Mullet may not win you any style points with a clothing expert, but if you are concerned about damage to your skin from prolonged sun exposure, the FTB Mullet does an excellent job of keeping the sun off the back of your head and neck as it is tucked under your hat.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5
