Brief:
This is a midnight, I can't sleep, lets build a rocket. Noticeable feature is that the engine is above the fins, uses a flyaway launch lug, or shoots from a tube. It has flown on e9-6.

Purple PopperPurple PopperConstruction:

  • 1- Nose cone is from a Super Big Bertha.
  • 1- small plastic baby juice bottle.
  • 1- 6 inch BT80 Tube.
  • 1- 12" 1/4 x 1/8 birch stip.
  • 3- 2.6 to .96 center rings
  • 1- custom center ring to .96
  • 1- Estes E engine hook
  • 1- Photo paper to create transition.
  • 1- .75 x 4 inch 3/32 balsa for fins
  • 1-.96 motor engine block
  • Kevlar® String, 4' of shockcords, reynolds wrap, 12" nylon chute.

I would say this is an Estes level 2/3 rocket. You have to create the transition yourself. plus you have to make holes for the wood strip to go through the transition. All the parts came from www.commonwealth.net.

Finishing:
The finish was done in plum high gloss monokote. You will need a monokote iron to put it on. This was my first monokote job. It seems to work nicely.

Flight:
I used a pack of E9-6 Estes motors. There is no room for wadding, but I had a nomax sock made for the chute. I used Kevlar® string mounted to the center ring and to the cone. I then attached the elastics cord between the Kevlar® loops.

Purple Popper The rocket flew straight, however after 3 flight the flame is starting to eat away at the tail fins. I need to find something better then reynolds wrap to protect them. Rocket flew out of sight on each flight.

Summary:
It is cool looking and can be shot from a tube. I still need a better way to protect the fins from flame damage.
