Students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville launch a hybrid rocket into the skies. SLI (Student Launch Initiative) is a student-lead project at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) that is sponsored by NASA. Students gain experience in designing, building, and launching a reusable rocket capable of carrying a payload that advances the fields in science and engineering. The project was proposed to UAH by NASA in order to offer students a way to gain hands-on experience in the engineering process. Under the supervision of Dr. Marlow Moser, it has since developed into a course offered throughout the year by the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department of UAH's College of Engineering. As a team, we are divided into eight groups: Avionics, Launch, Payload, Propulsion, Recovery, Structures, Systems, and Public Outreach. Each group meets at least once a week to discuss and work on the planning and the next phase of creating the rocket. Not only do the students just work on the rocket, they also visit elementary through high school students and attend local events to show the work of SLI and the importance of engineering and the sciences. www.eng.uah.edu
