Flight Log - 2012-02-04 - K Sonesen's Bottle Bat 3.0 (Tube Fin)

Yet another Larry Brand tube fin design that I cloned from his article here on Rocket Reviews.  Well, all but the soda bottle nose cone as it turns out that modern bottles are no longer properly sized to fit in a 3" body tube. I used a standard LOC 3" nose cone.

I named this rocket "Big Pink II" as the downscale version (Bottle Bat 2.6) was named "Big Pink".

Flight Date: 2012-02-04
Rocket Name: Bottle Bat 3.0 (Tube Fin)
Flyer's Name: K Sonesen
Motors: G76-7
Expected Altitude: 969.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 3.00 mph
Launch Site: LUNAR - Snow Ranch
Actual Altitude: 978.00 Feet

This was the first flight for this bird.  I drilled out the delay from 7 seconds down to 5 seconds to avoid the uh-oh's and ah!  Timing was right and deployment went well. Altimeter 2 said 978' apogee and 186 mph.  It wasn't until I was preparing to launch again that I noticed one of the tube-fins had separated slightly from the body tube and neighboring fins.  The paper covering failed, not the epoxy.  Big Pink (Bottle Bat 2.6) had this same thing happen. Note to self: Strip off glassine before epoxying fins in place.  Big Pink II will fly again.
