Flight Log - 2015-03-01 - Ken E. Coyote's Estes Star Wars R2-D2

Stock build purchased built & used off Ebay...will modify.  Of note is that I had built one of my own a year ago, but forgot to attach the clear fins (too many rockets grabbed that day).  No fins was a big mistake, but resulted in a hilarious flight as R2 swirled around the pad, crashed head first into snow and then did a firey explosive discharge from his butt...even the chute and lines were on fire for a bit!  Has been repaired and will fly again, but first I'll modify this used one since it's already beat up and I can do more testing on it.

*UPDATE* - Modified with small kevlar anchor cord and 1/4" x 36" Estes shock cord and finally got a successful flight.

Flight Date: 2015-03-01
Rocket Name: Estes Star Wars R2-D2
Kit Name: Estes - R2-D2 {Kit}
Flyer's Name: Ken E. Coyote
Motors: C6-3
Expected Altitude: 200.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 5.00 mph
Actual Altitude: 150.00 Feet

Another try for R2, but broken shock cord again.  R2 flew more at an angle this time and it seems like perhaps one of the clear fins broke a bit on take off and may have been flapping (was earlier cracked and repaired with cement and tape).  R2 flew up at an angle, then seemed to be nosing down, went up a bit again, then dropped again and ejection charge about 75' AGL.  Charge seemed very strong and blew the pod off and snapped the elastic cord.  Of note is that I did a repair from the last flight and added a kevlar cord to the body anchor and tied that to the elastic; however the elastic broke again in a different place.  I always felt the elastic was a bit too puny for the mass and weight of the pod, so I'll try replacing with a stronger elastic.  R2 will fly again!
