Flight Log - 2018-10-28 - Matthew Bond's Estes Mega Der Red Max

Estes upscaled Red Max Pro Series II kit.  The second of two Mega Red Max kits that I bought.  Added an eyebolt to the top centering ring and replaced the shock cord with 20 feet of braided Kevlar.  Added some balsa "dams" to the motor mount which allowed me to pot the TTW fin tabs in epoxy where they attached to the motor mount.  Flown using a Kevlar heat shield and a 30 inch Spherachute with a Jolly Logic Chute Release for recovery.  Rocket was finished in the "classic" red and black paint scheme with the Estes waterslide decals.  I was unable to get the large wrap decal applied (twice, since I had a spare) tearing both of them.  I was able to order a vinyl replacement from Mark at Stickershock and it went on perfectly as expected.

Well you can't win them all... Otherwise known as "One and Done".  After several years of flying the Mega Pink Max, I finally got motivated and finished it's twin.  Painted in the traditional Red and Black, my second Mega Max was ready for it's maiden flight.  The CTI H233 Red is a motor I've come to really love for this rocket, a fast high boost, without being overpowering.  The motor lit and the rocket ripped off the rail as expected, but then came apart in spectacular fashion with an audible "Pop" a couple hundred feet up, with pieces raining down around the pads.  The audience consensus was "CATO", but after recovering the pieces, it became obvious that the delay must have burned through somehow and fired the ejection charge early.  The parachute was being held by a Jolly Logic Chute Release which never stood a chance.  The chute was pulled open and the resulting zipper tore the airframe apart down to the top centering ring and then ripped the eyebolt out of the rocket, snapping off one of the fins in the process.  The only thing that was not recovered was the chute release.  The tether cord was still attached in one piece to the shock cord, so it looks like the retaining piece on the chute release was broken off.  The motor case appeared unharmed and was used later the same day with good results.  I'm already planning to build a 4" Citation Patriot with the nose cone...
