Flight Log - 2011-01-01 - Mike Greenwood's "Buzz" Lightyear

Slightly modified version of the Mid Power, Bucky Jones Space Cadet Rocket. I added a clear canopy and a figure of "Buzz" Lightyear from Toy Story fame.

Flight Date: 2011-01-01
Rocket Name: "Buzz" Lightyear
Kit Name: Pemberton Technologies - Bucky Jones Space Cadet {Kit}
Flyer's Name: Mike Greenwood
Motors: G64-8
Expected Altitude: 1,300.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 7.00 mph
Launch Site: MSRS-Memphis, TN
Actual Altitude: 800.00 Feet

First flight, almost disastrous! The rocket corkscrewed violently on liftoff, climbed to about 800ft. Ejection was late, nose cone and parachute separated from shock cord. Nosecone and rocket body free fell. Only paint damage to nose cone, rocket body and fins undamaged. Upon inspection after flight, it was determined that the nosecone weight broke free from the tip of the nosecone during liftoff and dropped to the bottom, drastically moving the CG below the CP causing a very unstable flight. At ejection the molded shock cord mount on the nose cone broke free separating the nose cone and parachute from the main rocket body.
