Estes - Porta-Pad II Launch Pad {Launch Pad} (2215) [?-?,2017-]

Contributed by Thomas Malthouse

Manufacturer: Estes

Launch Pad IIBrief:
Nice launch pad for up to D size motors. Pricey compared to the Quest pad ($25 vs. $20) but can accept 3/16 rod as well. Blast deflector very strong.

"Sturdy, plastic tripod design with tilt adjustment (up to 30 from vertical). Easy to set up and take down - no tools required! Comes complete with blast deflector and standoff, two piece 1/8" (3 mm) launch rod, safety cap and key. Porta-Pad II can accommodate a 3/16" (5 mm) launch rod - not included."

Pros:

  • Instructions good.
  • Snug, but not tight fit of legs
  • Strong (I would use an F20 on this thing).
  • Nice looking for futuristic models.

Cons:

  • Launch rod impossible to take apart.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

Spot on review. The Estes Porta-Pad, either the original or Porta-Pad II, represents the most useful, versatile design I've ever encountered in model rocket launch pads. They stow in tiny spaces, are incredibly easy to set up and take down, adjust in seconds, plus they last a LONG time. I have some approaching 40 years of age that still work fine. All that, and they even LOOK cool... That's definitely a launch pad!! The kicker? You can pick them up brand-new for VERY short bucks in several different starter sets. An inspired design.
