To simulate the thin Martian atmosphere the parachute needed to be deployed at an altitude more than 160,000 feet above the earth. A stratospheric balloon launched from Roswell Industrial Air Center, in New Mexico was used to initially lift the aeroshell which was then dropped and the engines beneath the vehicle boosted it to the required altitude. This final part of the flight and the landing take place over the White Sands Missile Range. The footage is from the third drop test conducted on August 15, 1967. *** Brought to you by StratoCat - Historical recopilation project on the use of stratospheric balloons in the scientific research, the military field and the aerospace activity.
