Prototype II-B

Flight

I lost sight of the rocket (again) on its way up, but I saw the ejection charge's flare against the dark sky. Thanks to the EMERGENCY ORANGE, I found the model 100 feet upwind of the pad, even with the fading light. - C6-5 [More]

Prototype II-B

Flight

About 500 feet up on a B4-4, the rocket arced away... AND SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR INTO THE CLEAR BLUE SKY. (Transitional lenses don't help!) I found the rocket 300 feet from the pad, with some minor fin damage. - B4-4 [More]

Prototype II-B

Flight

24 inch streamer let rocket land parallel to the ground about 100 feet from the pad. Need to extend elastic shock cord from 24 inches to 30 inches to avoid snapback damage. - A8-3 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

Arrow-straight flight, weathercocked slightly into the breeze. Landed 100 feet away from the pad.Body tube and tail assembly undamaged, but nose cone tip broke off. Heard the impact, so 1.75 by 18 inch streamer isn't long enough. - C6-5 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

Motor decided it was a B6-2, and blew rocket into 3 separate pieces while it was still upward bound. I recovered the nose cone, but everything else was lost. Not happy about THERMONUCLEAR Estes ejection charges! - B6-4 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

Partially ejected motor dragged the rocket down tail-first, and busted off an outer fin on impact. Too much descending drag from the folded 1.75 by 36 inch streamer.Used medium CA for repairs. - C6-5 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

About 150 feet up, the rocket veered to one side. On recovery, I found didn't get the broken fin back on exactly straight, which caused the swerve.Time to retire Prototype I! - C6-5 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

A bigger, beefier screw eye (Semroc SE-14) resolved this design's stability issues.Kicked the motor and free-fell to gouge the nose cone's shoulder.Needs a motor hook! - C6-5 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

The launch director asked if I noticed that this flight was a little less stable than the last.I didn't, because I was too excited to get this design into the air on a B6-4.Another good flight. - B6-4 [More]

Semroc Tau Zero

Flight

I remembered to tape the engine in.(Amazing how much more effective that is.)Ejection charge popped the streamer, and onlookers made approving noises. - A8-3 [More]

Sirius Rocketry Interrogator S-011 (Kit)

Review

Brief: I had seen Sirius Rocketry's "U.S.S. Atlantis Refit" online and was pretty intimidated by its apparent complexity. However, when I saw the Atlantis in person at NARCON 2006, it was smaller than I expected it to be. What really caught my eye was a new kit that David J. ... [More]

Centuri Groove Tube (Kit)

Review

Brief: Decades before Quest Aerospace's "Totally Tubular," Custom Rockets' "Razor," and the now-defunct Rogue Aerospace's "Hex Courier," the Centuri "Groove Tube" was my first encounter with a 6-pack of tube fins. I enjoyed this kit while I was ... [More]

Semroc SLS Javelin (Kit)

Review

Brief: Centuri's original "Large Scale" rockets were called "high power" kits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which used thicker-walled body tubes along with hard balsa fins and nose cones. Semroc's "SLS" series, which we now call "mid power" ... [More]

Semroc Javelin (Kit)

Review

Brief: The single-stage 4FNC Centuri Javelin was my very first model rocket, as seen in this photo of myself from the early 1970's. Estes model rockets were only available by mail order in South-Central Idaho back then, but I could easily buy Centuri model rockets at a drug store in my ... [More]
