Flight Log - 2015-03-10 - Ken E. Coyote's Rocketarium Mega Rebel

Great looking odd-roc in the style of the chubby rockets from the 50's.  Looks quite odd with its "fish bone" style, but at certain angles and in flight it looks great!

Flight Date: 2015-03-10
Rocket Name: Rocketarium Mega Rebel
Kit Name: Rocketarium - Mega Rebel {Kit} (RK-1212, RK-MREBL)
Flyer's Name: Ken E. Coyote
Motors: D12-3
Expected Altitude: 400.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 10.00 mph
Actual Altitude: 400.00 Feet

Rocket weathervaned slightly after leaving rod.  Still went up straight, ejection at apogee; however nose section got blown off and separated from body.  The body came down via "drag recovery" (it just fell).  Some of the upper tubing crushed a bit and a small break in the top side which I believe is repairable.  The nose section still had the chute and it drifted FAR.  It eventually came down in a tree about 20' up.  I had to get a ladder and a roof rake to get it down and was lucky that I could just reach it.  Will fly again; however the included 1/8" elastic band is in my opinion in no way up to the task of stopping the big upper section from being blown off with a D motor ejection.  This looks to be almost the same size cord from my Estes R2D2 which uses C6s and had the cords breaking.  Kevlar shield also failed...it stayed i the tube even though I was careful about placement and even had ends folded down towards motor in case they were "catching" as it was being blown forward.  So the kevlar shield failed so badly that it still stayed in the body tube even though the nose got blown completely off! Of note is that I have used Kevlar fabric shields before (have a number of them) and never had such issue...this fabric is way too stiff (almost like it was coated with CA) and it even had burn holes from the two times I used it.  Yup...kevlar burn-through even though it didn't come out of the tube!

This rocket needs more mods to fly well, but is still a cool looking rocket in flight.

*UPDATE* - I've added pics of the main body with some of the repaired damage.  Also added a pic of the standard cord next to the new thicker/wider one I'll be using now.  I'm also ditching the kevlar shield.  May replace it with my own kevlar or fiberglass if there isn't enough room for wadding/barf.
