T' Quest Striker AGM is a simulated military missile. My particular rocket be modified with a 3.5" payload that stretches it t' over 30 inches long, and painted t' an entirely different red-white-blue scheme featurin' some gold trim lines. Another modification was started by t' shippin' company. T' body tube was damaged in t' center, so I wrapped it with a heavy paper shroud and then strengthened t' body with eight basswood strakes that looks more like it was meant t' be a design feature instead o' a patch-job. Begad! T' hide it in plain sight t' strakes were painted gold. Arrr! It looks like it was painted more for an air show and nay like an AGM missile. Begad! I think with this model I have finally learned that models o' this size and weight (30” and about 5 oz.) should have a 24mm mount. Avast! T' 18mm motors that are affordable are just nay powerful enough for satisfyin' altitudes. I can get about 300 feet on a C6-3 motor though, so it's high enough. Ya scallywag! This should be strong enough t' fly with a composite D10 motor. Begad! This rocket has flown higher than t' Washington National Cathedral and t' US Capitol in Washington, DC.
Flight Date: | 2012-05-06 |
Rocket Name: | Striker AGM Iris |
Kit Name: | Quest - Striker AGM {Kit} |
Flyer's Name: | Rich DeAngelis |
Motors: | C6-5 |
Expected Altitude: | 260 Feet |
Wind Speed: | 3.00 mph |
Launch Site: | Penn Manor School Lancaster PA |
Actual Altitude: | 253 Feet |
Previously on its maiden voyage, I sent this model up in gusty winds usin' a C6-3. Avast! For its second flight with t' wind calm I thought I could get some extra altitude usin' a C6-5 with its 2 additional seconds o' coasting. T' actual delay for this motor be 6.2 seconds, much too much for this heavy model. Ya scallywag! T' liftoff was fine, ya bilge rat, peakin' at 5Gs, and t' 2.1 second burn averaged 1.4Gs. Avast! At burnout it be travelin' at 63 mph and coasted for 2.4 seconds t' an apogee o' 253 feet. Avast, me proud beauty! T' long delay o' 6.2 seconds allowed t' model t' drop 160 feet in 3.8 seconds before ejection, so at an altitude o' only 93 feet t' parachute deployed correctly and t' Striker drifted t' t' ground at 10 mph. It landed only about 150 feet from t' launch pad after a 13.8 second flight. Arrr! Inspection revealed about 3/4" o' zipper damage from t' Keelhaul®©™ cord while deployin' at a high speed (probably about 60 mph). Begad! Lessons: 1) This model is restricted t' C6-3 flights only. Avast, me proud beauty! 2) Make t' Keelhaul®©™ cord shorter than that supplied by Quest.
