Flight Log - 2014-08-30 - Rodney Earp's HyperLOC 835

Building for a NAR L1. Good Kit and goes together easy but did have warped fins out of the box. I used angle and clamps to keep them straight till the glue dried. All tubes fit together just right.

weight without engine 93oz

weight with engine 117 oz

Looks like I’ll fly this one with a J500 for my L2 also this Spring. Update, I passed my written L2 test without any problems, and flew it on a Aerotech J500G, great choice for my L2 in this Rocket.

I got a K185W, it has a 8 sec burn and should put this into the Mile high club.

UPDATE: Flew this in Orangeburg to 6700'

Reloads I have tried: I364FJ, I327DM, J500G, K185W, CTI I236

Flight Date: 2014-08-30
Rocket Name: HyperLOC 835
Kit Name: LOC/Precision - HyperLOC 835
Flyer's Name: Rodney Earp
Motors: K590
Expected Altitude: 8,500.00 Feet
Certification Flight: Level 2
Wind Speed: 3.00 mph
Launch Site: ROSCO
Actual Altitude: 3,145.00 Feet

This was a TRI Level 2 cert flight that went wrong from the beginning. The motor I wanted to use was a CTI K515 Skidmark but the Vender didn’t have one. But I was handed a “Cool Motor” a CTI K590 and after doing a little research I was uneasy with the power off the pad and was hesitant on using it.  Once to the field and trying to decide what to use I was convinced that it would be fine and would be a great flight.  So the motor was loaded and the HyperLOC 835 was destine for one final Flight!

It was fast off the pad with a little odd wiggle but then flew straight for another 1500’ before coming apart. The review of the pieces was odd to me, the forward payload tube had folded over the altimeter bay breaking apart releasing the chute and zippering the rest of the tube pulling form the nosecone and ripping the lines from the chute. The odd part was that the motor mount was attached to the centering rings but the Rings pulled away from the airframe as if it had expanded the airframe from the rings. Someone said that the air trapped in between the centering rings and the sudden increase in altitude created more pressure in between the rings and blew the sides out. They said I needed holes drilled up into the centering rings so the pressure could be equalize to the outside air.  I need to do little research on this and will up-date.

The bottom Line is when in doubt go with your gut feelings and on cert flights just play it safe and wait to push the limits of the rocket till you’re done with it.

I passed the written test and missed 2. went back and looked at the 2 missed and don't know why they were missed, I guess I went to fast! Of course the Flight was a big no pass!
