Favorite Rockets: Sweat Stained Clifton Tracking Station Hat of Death, most anything built from junk

Biography:

I started flying as a kid, quit (mostly) when I entered college, started back up when my son was young, quit again when he got bored, and then got into high power in 1999.  I am a moderator for several Yahoo groups: microhybrids, MicroMaxRockets, night_launch, and OddRocs. I also am the volunteer product announcement compiler for ROCKETS Magazine.

Favorite Quote:

"Rockets are just another name for trouble. Either you just had trouble, you are having trouble, or you are going to have trouble." (Milt Rosen, Viking Program Director, White Sands Missile Test Range)

However, I couldn't resist grabbing a Ginormous Rocket at Costco. I've seen similar products in the past but wasn't inclined to buy one. That was before the grandrocketeers. As ... [More]

G. Harry Stine photo collection

Blog

The Museum of Flight has a Flickr page featuring photos from the godfather of model rocketry, G. Harry Stine. At this posting, it currently has photos from NARAMs 1-10. Hopefully they will continue to post. Update: It turns out that this archive is only new to me. I guess more photos is too much to expect. [More]

Book Review: Make: High-Power Rockets, by Mike Westerfield

Blog

Make: High-Power Rockets, is written for anyone interested in high-power rocketry certification. The book takes a hands-on approach to designing rockets with rocket simulators, covers construction techniques, and deals with the sometimes tricky issues of picking the right black powder charge, drilling appropriately sized vent holes, and picking parachutes. Each rocket has detailed assembly ... [More]

It's the end of the line for Rockets Magazine :(

Blog

Well, as many of us had suspected, Rockets Magazine is no more. You can now download the final issue for free ( direct link ). The main article is a post-mortem with a walk down memory lane. I had fun reading the magazine both in print and digital formats and even helped out a bit by gathering and writing product announcements. I got a few freebies along the way and this issue features my last ... [More]

Just pinging the blog...

Blog

I took a break from rockets as I haven't built anything and the universe has conspired against me flying. A couple of follows have asked me how I'm doing, and that is greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I have discovered SpaceX's true motivation of their new, finned 'Moon BFR' which will take Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and a handful of invited artists around the Moon (hopefully!). (original ... [More]

Art Applewhite Rockets Ring of Fire (Kit)

Review

Brief The Ring of Fire is Art's latest kit and, as Art states, is the "epitome of Minimalism." Since the beginning, Art has pioneered the use of simple, low tech components - plastic plates, foam board and cardstock. Who else provides a kit that has been printed on a computer? However, the ... Brief The Ballistic Chicken is a basic 3FNC, 18mm-powered rocket...with a cool chicken-head nose cone. It is the first offering from Australia-based I Build Rockets.
